Japanese Art Sound Archive collaboration: Mitsunori Kurashige, Seven Performances in 1974 (A Recreation), 2020

　

The Japanese Art Sound Archive collaborated with Mitsunori Kurashige to produce Seven Performances in 1974 (A Recreation), which references the artist’s original 1974 works at Tamura Gallery. The new work is presented in the exhibition “Mitsunori Kurashige + Junji Amano: Where Minimalism Leads,” which opens on November 14th, 2020 at the Yokosuka Museum of Art. I contributed a text on the 1974 performances to the exhibition catalog.
　
Approximately five years after his debut in 1968, Kurashige stopped using a fluorescent lamp, his trademark material, and had several performances in his private space to reflect upon his artistic practice. His solo exhibition in Tamura Gallery provided him the opportunity to present his process of trial and error. Kurashige displayed all of the materials from his performances, posted instructions on the gallery wall, and gave a performance every day during the exhibition. The seven performances consisted of passive actions such as looking in the mirror, hiding in the corner, and listening to music.
　
The new work, Seven Performances in 1974 (A Recreation), is a video recording of a re-enactment of the performances by Kurashige. The text describes the original 1974 performances in detail and attempts to consider their significance in his artistic career.
