Kayoko Ueda and Erize Watanabe, Weaving Time, 1973/2022 Performance|Ayako Ishiba / Mayuka Kawakami
Kayoko Ueda and Erize Watanabe sat at a table facing each other and put on blindfolds. Each took a sheet of drawing paper from a pile placed on the table, and after slowly writing “1” on them, dropped them at their feet. They both listened to the sounds the other produced, trying to match as much as possible the timing of their actions, and took another piece of paper on which they both wrote “2”, dropping them afterwards. The floor, as well as the chairs and the table were all covered with vinyl sheets. Their attempts to act simultaneously went on until 60 sheets of paper prepared for each were finally all scattered over the floor. Weaving Time, as the performance was titled, was the last work in the Tautology series presented by Ueda and Watanabe in 1973. The women repeated the above set of attempts several times during the duration of the exhibition.
