Masako Shibata and Naoyoshi Hikoska unspooled an open reel tape and laid it on the wooden floor of the Kuni Chiya Buyo Kenkyujo (Kuni Chiya Dance Laboratory) in the Todai Mae Yojien (Kindergarten in front of Tokyo University). They took it out of the room and stretched it across the wall. Then, they crossed the roof, circled the building, and returned it to the room, forming a loop. The tape, which had a recording of the sound of the sea, was shared and played on two open reel decks simultaneously by both Shibata and Hikosaka. The decks were sometimes placed on the floor of the room and sometimes on the roof. Arata Tani, who saw them playing from the roof, said that the two decks created “a relationship that can be described as a call and response with sound.” This performance by Masako + Naoyoshi, called “Tape Duet,” was titled SEA FOR FLOOR, SEA FOR WALL, and SEA FOR ROOF.

The work was performed at the “Komaba Anthology” event held by Hikosaka and Jun Hatta in September 1973. The other performers were Chiya Kuni, her students, and Sho Kazakura. One of the triggers of the event was that Hikosaka had met Kuni and Kazakura at the event “Great Concert – White Anthology” held by Yasunao Tone at the Lunami Gallery in June of the same year.
